Description
This student coursebook is available exclusively to registered learners enrolled in this course offered by the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning.
We the People: The American Jewish Experience explores the rich and complex history of Jewish life in America through an engaging, text-based study of the people, communities, ideas, and experiences that shaped American Judaism. Prepared to coincide with America’s semiquincentennial—the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States—this coursebook examines the deep roots of American Jewish history, the growth and transformation of Jewish communities, and the ongoing relationship between Jewish identity and American life.
Through ten structured lessons, learners journey from the earliest Jewish settlements in colonial America through the development of modern American Jewish life. The course explores both chronological and thematic perspectives, including immigration, community building, antisemitism, American culture, Israel, Jewish food traditions, and the future of American Jewish identity.
Drawing upon historical texts, scholarly insights, primary sources, and diverse perspectives, this coursebook highlights the many experiences that have shaped American Jewish life across geography, culture, gender, race, and class. Rather than presenting a single narrative, We the People: The American Jewish Experience invites learners to explore the complexity, challenges, achievements, and continuing evolution of the American Jewish story.
Whether used as part of the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning curriculum or for continued Jewish study, this coursebook provides an accessible and meaningful exploration of how Jewish communities have participated in and contributed to the American experience.
