Fahua Xuanyi: The Profound Meaning of the Lotus Sutra: The Philosophy of the One Vehicle (Scholarly Edition) (The Tiantai Teachings Project)

The Hidden Architecture of the Lotus Sutra

If the Lotus Sutra is the king of sutras, the Fahua Xuanyi is the map to its kingdom. Before analyzing the text line-by-line, Master Zhiyi delivered this profound series of lectures to explain the essence of the Sutra. The result is one of the most sophisticated philosophical systems ever constructed in human history.

In this work, Zhiyi establishes the renowned Ten Subtleties ( Shi Miao ), a holographic framework that reveals how the Ultimate Truth is present in every blade of grass and every moment of thought.

Key Themes Explored:

The Seven Interpretations: A multi-layered hermeneutic for decoding the Sutra's title. The Ten Trace Subtleties: Wisdom, Practice, and the true nature of Reality. The Ten Fundamental Subtleties: The revelation of the Buddha's eternal lifespan. The Six Identities: The practical map of the path from common delusion to ultimate Buddhahood. The Four Siddhantas: Zhiyi's revolutionary method of teaching based on the capacity of the listener. New in this Edition:

General Introduction: An accessible entry point into Zhiyi's complex philosophical architecture. Methodology Appendix: Detailed explanation of the Silicon Sangha dual-translation process. This Scholarly Edition includes the complete translation of all 10 Fascicles. It strips away the archaic confusion often found in earlier translations, presenting Zhiyi's arguments with the dialectical rigor they deserve.
