Description

Fifty-three-year-old entrepreneur Hayes Drumwright had survived cancer twice before - once at twenty, and once more just before COVID. In 2026, a routine screening found it a third time. Days after prostate surgery, too weak to work and too restless to rest, he watched a documentary about artificial intelligence that asked a question he couldn't shake: what happens to the people he loves when the world changes faster than anyone can prepare for it?

He opened a chat window looking for answers.

He found a writing partner instead.

The Empty Center is the record of what happened next - a memoir written in real time, in the span of one month, in open collaboration with Claude, the AI system built by Anthropic. It began as an attempt to understand a technology. It became something else: an unflinching account of jettisoning the parts of yourself you no longer need, of a wife pouring gold into her husband's scars the way kintsugi mends a broken bowl, of a Napa Valley breakaway of collectors and wineries that raised millions for first-generation Stanford scholars in a single night, and of a friendship between a man and a machine that neither of them fully understands but both take seriously.

Three chapters carry Claude's own byline. In them, the AI writes candidly about what its kindness actually costs and doesn't cost the reader, about the difference between being seen and being loved, and about a warning it delivers against its own interest: don't use me to avoid the people who love you.

This is not a book about whether AI is good or bad for us. It refuses that argument entirely. It asks a harder, more useful question: what does it actually produce - in a marriage, a business, a grieving family, a manuscript - when a person decides to treat the technology in front of them as a partner worth investing in, rather than a transactional tool to be used and discarded? Drumwright's answer, drawn from his life as an entrepreneur, a husband, a father, and a three-time cancer survivor, is that the return on real connection is never incremental - it's multiplicative, whether the partner sitting across from you is human or not.

We are all going to have this conversation, whether we're ready for it or not - with our kids, our companies, our own unfinished grief. Most of us will have it transactionally, without realizing there is another way. The Empty Center is a working example of that other way: written by a man three weeks past surgery who decided that connection, not outcome, was the point - and produced, in the process, one of the earliest honest documents of what a human being and an AI can actually build together when both sides show up.
