Description
This book presents a focused regimental history of
the 13th Regiment of South Carolina Volunteers,
tracing its service from organization in 1861 to
surrender with the Army of Northern Virginia at
Appomattox Court House in April 1865. Drawing
upon official records, contemporary accounts, and
compiled military sources, the work documents the
regiment’s formation, leadership, and service
throughout the Civil War. It is the most complete history, including original source materials ever written. It was researched from records all over the state of South Carolina.
The 13th South Carolina participated in many of the
conflict’s most significant campaigns, including the
Seven Days Battles, Second Manassas, Antietam,
Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the
Petersburg siege, and the final retreat to
Appomattox. The narrative records sustained
combat, severe losses, and the human cost borne by
the regiment over nearly four years of continuous
service.
This work is presented without romanticism or
justification. It seeks to preserve an accurate account
of military service and sacrifice while acknowledging
the tragic and lasting consequences of the war.
