Description
This book is the story of an historical enquiry carried out, in northern Europe, by a small boat that was propelled by the wind in her sails.
Many of the late medieval trading cities of Europe were built on the shores of the Baltic Sea and the southern North Sea. These cities, members of the Hanseatic League, were kept in contact with one another and with their markets by the voyages of their fleet of sailing cargo ships, the cogs. Hanseatic cities such as Cologne, Hamburg, Lubeck Stralsund and many others remain and flourish to this day. The modern inhabitants of these cities are intensely proud of their Hanseatic inheritance. The cities of the Hanse have been carefully conserved, and they present themselves to the visitor very well. The Hanseatic League constitutes an episode in history that deserves to be remembered. Furthermore, it is a topic that is aptly to be investigated by a modern navigator under sail.
Hanseatic Voyage is an account of a two year sailing voyage made in the waters and into the harbours of the medieval Hanseatic merchants, navigators and pirates.
