Description
Description A magical and unforgettable children’s classic, The Wonderful Adventures of Nils follows a mischievous boy on an extraordinary journey across Sweden, carried into wonder, danger, and discovery on the back of a wild goose.
Nils Holgersson is lazy, selfish, and cruel to animals—until he is magically shrunk to tiny size after offending a tomte. Suddenly the farm animals he once tormented are larger than life, and Nils must cling to the back of the family goose as it joins a flock of wild geese flying north. What begins as punishment becomes a sweeping adventure through forests, lakes, mountains, villages, farms, and legends, as Nils sees his homeland from the air and learns how much courage, kindness, and responsibility truly matter.
Written by Nobel Prize-winning author Selma Lagerlöf, The Wonderful Adventures of Nils is both a classic fantasy and a rich imaginative journey through Swedish geography, folklore, wildlife, and culture. Filled with talking animals, old stories, natural beauty, danger, humor, and moral growth, it remains one of the great works of children’s literature. For readers who love classic adventure, animal stories, fairy tales, and journeys of transformation, Nils’s flight with the wild geese is as enchanting today as when it first appeared.
About the Author
Selma Lagerlöf (1858–1940) was a Swedish novelist, short story writer, teacher, and one of the most important literary figures of Scandinavia. Born in Värmland, Sweden, she drew deeply on Swedish folklore, rural life, legend, history, and landscape in her fiction. Her writing combines realism with mythic imagination, giving ordinary people, places, and moral choices a sense of wonder and spiritual depth.
Lagerlöf’s best-known works include Gösta Berling’s Saga , Jerusalem , The Emperor of Portugallia , and The Wonderful Adventures of Nils . In 1909 she became the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, and she was later the first woman elected to the Swedish Academy. Her work is admired for its storytelling power, compassion, national feeling, and ability to blend folk tradition with literary artistry.
The Wonderful Adventures of Nils was originally written as a school geography reader, but Lagerlöf transformed the assignment into a beloved literary adventure. By sending Nils across Sweden with the wild geese, she created a book that teaches through enchantment rather than lecture, joining moral education, natural history, folklore, and fantasy into one enduring classic.
